Coordination General of Environmental Inspection of the Municipal Environment Secretariat (Semurb) has released a report on the actions carried out in August 2023, ensuring compliance with the Municipal Environmental Code. The report indicates the opening of 47 processes, including 14 fines and 33 notifications.
In the survey conducted, the water and sanitation company in charge of the capital’s water supply and sanitation ranked first in terms of fines. BRK Ambiental was fined seven times in August, responsible for 50% of the environmental crimes identified during inspections that required immediate punitive measures.
The infractions occurred in various neighborhoods of the city. Among the fines, confirmed after testing with pigments, the company was found to be discharging sewage into two streams in the capital, Leste Oeste and Riacho Salgadinho.
These infractions go against the actions carried out by the Municipality of Maceió, which is undertaking the largest environmental project in the city’s history, investing over R$ 76 million in the Renasce Salgadinho program, aimed at revitalizing and requalifying the stream. The enforcement actions are essential to prevent further damage to the environment and ensure the safe and effective execution of the project.
“We are committed to continue monitoring and fining regardless of the size of the offender, environmental crimes will not be tolerated and appropriate measures will continue to be taken,” said Marcos Cavalcanti, Municipal Secretary of the Environment.
Part of the environmental inspection work is carried out in partnership with the Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat (Seminfra), which, in an integrated manner, carries out the Operation Línguas Sujas, inspecting, identifying, and fining the owners and responsible parties for clandestine sewage networks in the stormwater drainage system in Maceió.
Other data
In August, Semurb actively engaged the population in its inspection operations, receiving and investigating 12 anonymous complaints. The complaints covered various categories, including noise pollution, sewage, and others. Three complaints were registered in each of these categories, with two complaints related to air pollution and one related to the suppression of native vegetation.
The population can report environmental infractions by contacting the number (82) 3312-5242 or by sending an email to: coord.fiscalizacaoambiental@sedet.maceio.al.gov.br. The collaboration of society is essential for the protection of the environment.
